          OVERVIEW

Álea is a wearable device that turns movement into real-time sound manipulation. It reimagines the relationship between fashion, music and technology – allowing the body to become a live instrument. Embedded with gyroscopes and accelerometers, its sensors let users reshape audio tracks through motion, creating a choreographic form of sound performance.

CONTEXT Designed for an immersive, post-digital 2050 environment, Alea uses embedded sensors to allow participants to modulate audio effects through dance. Each sensor interacts with different audio tracks, shaping distinct sound effects in real time. As a choreographic instrument, it enables music to be composed live by the body in motion. Blending fashion and technology, Alea creates intimate, collective sonic experiences, offering a tactile response to a world in search of deeper connection.

          TECHNICAL
          DETAILS
Two Adafruit 9-DOF sensors are mounted on the wrists and interfaced with a Seeed Studio XIAO ESP32C3 microcontroller. The system connects via Bluetooth to Ableton Live, where wrist inclination and movement velocity are captured in real-time to manipulate audio filters and effects.

INSTALLATION          DESIGN The project was unveiled through a live performance by two dancers. By wearing the devices, they simultaneously shaped the music through their movements, creating a real-time dialogue between choreography and sound.

The scenography features layers of organza draped from a metal mesh, supported by a wooden structure suspended from the ceiling. This organza ceiling was conceived as a labyrinth: a space to hide from others or seek human connection.
